If water drips from your ceiling when it is not raining, the roof is usually not the cause. The most common sources are condensation in the attic, an attic air conditioner with a clogged drain line or rusted drain pan, and a leaking pipe or bathroom fixture. Trapped water from an earlier storm can also drip for a day or two after the rain stops.
The usual suspects
Attic condensation
Warm, humid air from the house rises into the attic and condenses on cold nails and roof decking, then drips. It is most common on cool mornings and in winter. Pine Bluff’s average humidity is about 69%, so condensation is common, especially in poorly vented attics. See roof leak or condensation.
Air conditioner drain lines
Many homes here have the AC air handler in the attic. It makes water all summer, which drains through a line to the outside. When that line clogs with algae, the pan overflows onto the ceiling. This usually happens on hot, dry days, not rainy ones.
Plumbing
A leaking supply line, a bathroom fixture above the ceiling, a failed wax ring under an upstairs toilet or a vent pipe connection can all drip into a ceiling.
Water trapped from the last storm
After a heavy rain, water can sit in insulation or on top of drywall and drip for a day or two after the sky clears.

What to check first
- Look at the AC drain pan in the attic. Water in the pan or rust means the line is clogged.
- Check your water meter with all taps off. If it moves, you have a plumbing leak.
- Look for frost or droplets on nails in the attic on a cool morning.
- Note whether the stain is under a bathroom or a pipe.
Why does my roof leak days after it rained?
Water that got in during the storm can soak into insulation and sit on top of the drywall, then keep dripping slowly after the rain stops. It still means there is a roof leak. The drip is just delayed.
When it is the roof after all

Can a roof leak show up in a dry week?
Only if water was trapped from earlier rain. A roof cannot let in water that is not there. If you see fresh drips after several dry days, look at the AC, plumbing and condensation first. On cool mornings after a humid night, check the attic for droplets on nails. In summer, check the AC drain pan. Year round, check the water meter. Most of the time one of those three explains it.
Who should I call?
If the drip is under the AC unit, call an HVAC tech. If the meter moves with taps off, call a plumber. If the stain grows only after rain, call a roofer. If you are not sure, we can look and tell you, and if it is not the roof, we will say so. See ceiling stain but the roof looks fine.

How do I stop an AC pan from overflowing?
Clear the drain line and check the pan for rust. A float switch that shuts the AC off when the pan fills helps prevent ceiling damage.

If it is steady or near electrical fixtures, treat it as urgent. Shut off water or the AC if either is the source.
