A roof leak shows up during or right after rain and follows one path from a single entry point. Condensation shows up without rain, usually on cool or humid mornings, and appears as many small wet spots on nails and the underside of the decking across the attic. Timing, pattern and location tell you which one you have.

Why condensation happens in Pine Bluff attics
Warm, moist air from inside the house rises into the attic through gaps around lights, the attic hatch and pipes. When it meets the cold underside of the roof, it condenses into water. Metal roofs and skylights

How to test it yourself
- Check the attic on a cool morning with no rain. Droplets or frost on nails point to condensation.
- Check again during a rain. A fresh single trail points to a leak.
- See where bath and kitchen fans actually vent.
- Look at the soffit vents from the attic. They should not be blocked by insulation.
How each one is fixed
A roof leak is fixed on the roof, at the flashing, boot or valley that failed. Condensation is fixed by stopping moist air from reaching the attic and letting the attic breathe: sealing gaps, venting fans outside and clearing soffit vents. Can I have both a leak and condensation?
Yes, and it happens more often than you would think. An attic with poor ventilation can have condensation all winter and a separate leak at a pipe boot or chimney. The fix for one does not fix the other. That is why we check the attic in dry weather as well as look for a rain trail.
Does attic insulation matter?
It does. Insulation that is thin or has gaps lets warm, moist air from the house reach the roof deck. Insulation pushed into the soffits blocks the outside air that is supposed to flow up and out through the ridge or roof vents. Keeping the soffits clear and sealing gaps around lights and the attic hatch cuts condensation a lot.
What does condensation do over time?

Can condensation cause ceiling stains?
Yes. Enough condensation drips onto the ceiling and stains it like a leak.
