Porch, patio and carport roofs usually leak for two reasons: the roof is too flat for the material on it, or the joint where it ties into the house was never flashed right. Shingles on a very low slope let water back up underneath, and a porch roof butted against the wall without flashing sends water straight into the wall. We fix the tie-in, switch to the right material for the slope when needed, and send photos.
Porch roofs and carports get added on more than any other part of a house, often by different builders, years after the house was built. That is why they leak so often. The main roof may be fine while the porch ceiling has stains and the wall where the porch meets the house is rotting.

The two big causes
Too flat for shingles
Asphalt shingles need slope to shed water. Manufacturers and the building code call for at least a 2 in 12 slope with special underlayment, and more for a standard install. Many porch roofs are flatter than that. In a hard rain, water backs up under the shingles and leaks through the nail holes. The right fix is a low-slope material such as modified bitumen, TPO or metal. A slope of 2 in 12 means the roof drops 2 inches for every 12 inches it runs out from the house. Hold a level against the underside of a porch rafter and measure: many porch roofs around town come in at 1 or 1.5 in 12.
A bad tie-in to the house
Where a porch roof meets the house wall, it needs apron or step flashing tucked behind the siding or into the brick. Often it was just butted against the wall and caulked. The caulk fails and water runs into the wall and down onto the porch ceiling. See roof flashing repair.
Patio covers and carports
Aluminum patio covers and metal carports leak at panel joints, where they attach to the house, and at fasteners. Panels can be dented or holed by hail and falling limbs. We reseal joints, replace fasteners and fix the attachment to the house, or replace damaged panels.

What you can check yourself
