The ridge cap is the row of folded shingles along the peak of your roof, and on many roofs it covers a ridge vent. Wind lifts and cracks those caps first, and wind-driven rain then gets under them or through the vent. We replace the damaged caps, reseat or replace the vent, and send you before and after photos.
The peak is the highest, most exposed part of your roof. Every storm hits it first. When a few ridge caps crack or blow off, you may not see it from the yard, but the next hard rain finds the gap. Leaks from the ridge often show up in the middle of a ceiling, far from any wall, which confuses a lot of homeowners.

What you can check from the ground
Look along the peak from both sides of the house. The ridge should look like one straight, even line. Gaps, lifted pieces or a different color where a cap is missing all point to trouble. Check the yard and gutters for shingle pieces after storms. In the attic, look along the underside of the peak with a light for water stains or daylight at the ends of the vent.
Storm damage and insurance
If a storm tore off ridge caps, that is wind damage and may be covered by your homeowners policy. Take photos of the pieces in the yard and the roof before any repair. Keep your ridge in shape
After any storm with gusts over about 50 mph, walk around the house and look at the peak and the yard. Catching a missing cap the same week is a small repair. Waiting until the next storm lets water soak the decking under the vent. If you are replacing a ridge vent, ask for a baffled vent with a solid end plug. It holds up far better to the wind-driven rain we get in spring. Trim branches that touch the roof near the peak, since rubbing limbs grind caps down over time.

Can I replace a few ridge caps myself?
Getting to the peak safely is the hard part. The roof is steepest to stand on up there and a fall is serious. If only one or two caps blew off, a roofer can usually replace them quickly.
Do ridge vents cause leaks?
A good baffled ridge vent installed correctly should not. Cheap or cracked vents, missing end plugs, and vents on very windy exposures can let rain in.
Why is the leak in the middle of my ceiling?
The ridge runs down the middle of most roofs, so a ridge leak drips far from the walls. Water can also run along a rafter before it falls.
Should I close up my ridge vent?
No. The attic needs ventilation. Closing the vent can trap heat and moisture. Fix or replace the vent instead.
How long does a ridge cap repair take?
