What goes into a new roof
- Tear-off of the old roof down to the decking
- Decking checked sheet by sheet, bad sheets replaced (shown in photos)
- Synthetic underlayment, plus ice and water shield in valleys and around chimneys
- New drip edge on eaves and rakes
- New step and counter flashing, not reused old metal
- New pipe boots and vents
- Starter strip, shingles and ridge caps nailed to the maker’s pattern
- Balanced attic ventilation
- Cleanup with magnets for nails, and after photos
Permits and paperwork

Consider a stronger roof
If you are replacing anyway, ask about Class 4 impact-resistant shingles and FORTIFIED Roof building methods, which hold up better to hail and wind. Arkansas’s Strengthen Arkansas Homes Act set up grants of up to $15,000 for FORTIFIED roofs and requires insurers to offer premium discounts for them. Choosing shingles for Pine Bluff
Architectural (dimensional) shingles are the standard choice today. They are thicker than old three-tab shingles and hold up better to wind. Look at the wind rating on the package, and for the strongest hold, ask for the maker’s high-wind nailing pattern. If hail is your main worry, Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost more up front but can pay back through fewer claims and possible insurance discounts. Lighter colors run a little cooler in our hot summers, which is easier on the shingles and the attic. Whatever you pick, the installation details (flashing, underlayment, ventilation and nailing) decide how long it lasts more than the brand on the bundle.

How long does a roof replacement take?
Most homes take one to a few days, depending on size, weather and how much decking needs replacing.
Can you put new shingles over the old ones?
Code allows it in some cases, but we recommend a tear-off so bad decking and flashing get fixed and the new roof lasts longer.
Will insurance pay for a new roof?
If storm damage is widespread, often yes, minus your deductible. Age and wear are not covered. See our insurance claim help page.
Do I need to be home during the replacement?
Not necessarily, but we need access to power and the driveway, and we walk through the plan with you first.
Should I replace gutters with a new roof?
Not always. If your gutters are sound, we rehang them after the new drip edge goes on. If they are rusted or sagging, it is a good time to replace them.
What happens if you find rotted decking?
We photograph it and replace only the bad sheets, at the per-sheet price in your written estimate.
